It’s a deeper delve into critical theory that my editor and publisher thought was straying off the point of the book. I agree, but I think this is good stuff and ideal to kick off The Age Of Stupid with. Interestingly the reviewer of the book in The Times said he wanted more about this, so let’s hope he subscribes.
Crackpots
Undergraduate degrees in the UK nowadays, at least in the Humanities subjects, are essentially a Ponzi scheme. Pack ‘em in, fill ‘em up, chuck ‘em out. For this you get a head stuffed with nonsense, a pretty meaningless qualification shared by millions of other people, a nice round bill for thirty thousand pounds, and a justified sense of smouldering resentment at being sold a pup. (There are, of course, still good academics doing good work, and if you stumble over one, grab hold, squeeze tight, and don’t ever let go.)
