Stand-up comedy has changed a lot since I was a lad. Back then it was a very specific strain, a hangover from the social clubs and trade associations of the pre-television world, and very much associated with the working class. It was just one aspect of the thriving world of comedy; when you heard that somebody was a comedian, you didn’t automatically picture them riffing alone with a microphone in front of a live audience. Many TV comedians never did that, or they had abandoned it decades before.
